Southern Living names Craven Street one of most charming in the South

Southern Living has bestowed some serious kudos to Beaufort. It’s not always the town, or the beach, or one of our many historic sites that gets the accolades.

This time around it was Craven Street in downtown Beaufort, SC… and they named it one of the most beautiful streets in all of the south on a recent list. It came in at #5 in fact.

Craven Street is certainly a street to walk if you’re in town. It’s home to many beautiful homes and oak-lined walkways from impressive mansions that overlook the Beaufort river to Victorian and Queen Anne style homes along the way. Craven Street is also home to The Castle, The Secession House, Beaufort’s Arsenal and the History Museum, the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church and the gravesite of Robert Smalls.

Southern Living said, “In the 1800s plantation owners chose Craven Street as the prime location to build their summer homes due to the fact that the intercoastal breeze flows through even on the hottest summer day. Here, you’ll scope out some gorgeous porches and, at the end, the classic “This View Brought to you by Beaufort, SC” sign, as well as the historic, three-story mansion known as The Castle.”

“The South has so many hidden treasures and undiscovered gems. Locations that girlfriends, families, and couples plan trips around visiting with great restaurants, amazing shopping, beautiful beaches, and some of the best bars and breweries. We also have gorgeous spots that are off the map.”

On the list along with Craven Street are Bull Street in Savannah and Church Street in Charleston.

Number one on the list is Belgravia Court in Louisville, KY. It’s home to the largest contiguous collection of Victorian mansions in the country.

Not bad company, Beaufort.
