AMVETS Flag Retirement Ceremony
Have you ever wondered what to do with your faded, tattered, and torn Old Glory? Well mark your calendars because AMVETS Post 70, with the help of local Boy Scouts, are hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony on November 10 at their Post on Ribaut Road. The patriotic ceremony will begin at 10:00am and is open to the public. The AMVETS and the Boy Scouts welcome you to take part in a time-honored tradition as they retire local flags with dignity and respect. If you have any flags that need proper disposal, please bring them to the AMVETS Post prior to the ceremony.
Along with the ceremony, the AMVETS will be welcoming Master Seargeant James Handrinos as their special guest speaker. Handrinos entered the Marine Corps in June of 1954 and went through boot camp on Parris Island. In addition to serving in both Japan and Vietnam, Handrinos was stationed at Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort. He retired from the US Marine Corps in 1974 and is a beloved member of the Beaufort community.
After the Flag Retirement Ceremony, everyone is invited to stay for the Marine Corps Birthday Party hosted by AMVETS Post 70! A potluck lunch provided by the members will be served. Guests are welcome to bring a dish to share, but it is not required. Everyone is welcome to eat and visit with Post members.
Who are the AMVETS?
AMVETS (American Veterans) is the nation’s most inclusive Congressionally-chartered veterans service organization, representing the interests of 20 million veterans. AMVETS is open to and fighting for all who honorably served in the United States military, including the Reserve and Guard. With more than 250,000 members nationwide, they are veterans serving veterans.
AMVETS Post 70 is designed to bring together all American Veterans and their families with one common bond, service to the United States of America.
When you pass by AMVETS Post 70 while driving down Ribaut Road, your first thought might be that it is just another bar, but you would be wrong. Beaufort is home to the largest AMVETS Post in the state of South Carolina. Steeped in history, Post 70 was established in 1977 and currently has a membership that is over 800 strong. Their modern 7000 square foot facility in Port Royal offers spacious meeting rooms, food services, and a fully equipped bar that is open 7 days per week.
AMVETS Post 70 is involved in the local community by supporting Boy Scouts, ROTC programs and various other social programs. The group has active Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of AMVETS organizations.
They participate in Memorial Day and Veterans Day events as well as Wreaths Across America. AMVETS provides Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for local families that are struggling and holiday meals for those who otherwise have nowhere to go. The members make sure children in the community have a Christmas and a visit from Santa.
AMVETS Post 70 is committed to helping active military personnel, veterans, and their families. This friendly and welcoming group invites you to stop by the Post located at 1831 Ribaut Road in Port Royal and see what they are all about!
