ARTworks Afterschool program to resume in September
Coinciding with the beginning of the school year, ARTworks Afterschool will resume the week of September 10th, with a variety of fun, creative, and educational programs available after school for students age 6 to 16. Each class meets one day each week from 4–5:30pm, and classes run for 7 weeks. A Family Showcase is also scheduled for October 26 from 5-6pm.
At ARTworks Afterschool, our children can enjoy learning watercoloring, creative writing, quilting, poetry and much more.

ARTworks Afterschool on Tuesdays, September 11-October 23
Lowcountry Live! ~ Performing Arts with Heather Denardo for ages 6-9. Designed to bring the Lowcountry to life through movement, poetry, and prose, in this class we will delve into the ecology and life of Beaufort. Each day we will explore a new and fascinating aspect of the unique place that is the Lowcountry. Students will create poems, plays, and movements based on our discoveries!
Metal Embossed Masterpieces ~ Visual Arts with Jean Norton-Torjussen for ages 9 -12. In this class students will create decorative embossed metal art from original designs. After copying designs onto flexible metal, students will work their projects by adding details using metal working tools, sanding, and staining. Once completed each project will be finished to become a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry, metal artwork mounted on wood, or metal cladding for embellishment of found items. Let your creativity loose while learning to work with metal.
ARTworks Afterschool on Wednesdays, September 12-October 24
Creative Writing & Stories By You ~ Literary Arts with Lisa Rentz for ages 9-16. Learn to write by diving right in. Fill the pages with your ideas and adventures. Each class session is dedicated to writing time and group discussions of ideas and questions. Students get individual feedback about their work, as well as group instruction in vocabulary, description, and editing. Notebooks and pencils provided, plus a fun assortment of reference materials to spark the inspiration: aerial maps of Beaufort, pictures of animals, books about nature, magazines about food.
Quilting with Head, Heart, and Hands ~ Visual Arts with Mary Campbell for ages 9-13. Through simple and fun, hands-on projects, students will learn the basics of quilt making including choosing patterns and fabrics, using the proper tools stitching blocks together, and making a “quilt sandwich”. By the end of the course, each student will have created a small quilt that reflects his or her individual interest. Students will also have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to begin another quilt on their own.
ARTworks Afterschool on Thursdays, September 13-October 25
Watercolor With Pencils ~ Visual Arts with Jean Norton-Torjussen for ages 6-9. The Watercolor With Pencils class is intended to encourage an atmosphere of discovery while familiarizing students with the laws of perspective, overall good design and the use of color. Bring your favorite photos and we’ll learn how to bring your drawings to life with watercolor pencils.
My Word! performance art with LaShante Ase for ages 11-14. This workshop is an exploration into the dynamic art of performance poetry. Students will learn techniques and study spoken word artists’ styles. Students will also learn how to connect with their inner poet, develop their own personal performance style, and bring their voice to the stage!
