Beaufort Academy hosts girls basketball team from New Zealand
The Beaufort Academy Lady Eagles girls varsity basketball team hosted a game on Saturday against a team on a goodwill visit from the country of New Zealand. New Zealand? They come from the land down under. No, not Australia, the beautful islands just east of Australia, popular for being the location where the epic Lord of the Rings movies were filmed. And a great time it was.
The girls team from Ruapehu College, a high school in Ohakune, New Zealand, is visiting two Beaufort County schools from Saturday through mid-week next week. It’s players will be at Beaufort Academy on Monday helping out and teaching some PhysEd classes, before moving on.
For Saturday’s game, half of the student body of Beaufort Academy was asked by staff to cheer for the visiting team in a goodwill gesture, and the other half rooted on the home team Eagles. The New Zealand National Anthem was also played before the game.
The girls all had a great time enjoying the experience, playing for fun, and comparing how competitive sports are played on eachother’s side of the globe.
In the end, Beaufort Academy won the game 45-37… but everyone in attendance was a winner.
