Local oyster reef building projects planned in April
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources SCORE program is planning several local oyster reef building projects throughout the month of April. The SCORE project is a community based oyster habitat restoration project that utilizes recycled oyster shell to construct experimental oyster reefs in coastal South Carolina. The program gives volunteers the opportunity to work along side SCDNR scientists, learning about their local environment and helping to preserve and restore oyster reef habitat.
This is your hands-on opportunity to contribute and help protect Beaufort’s waterways and shorelines while creating habitat for marine life.
New reefs are being built at Eddings Point Landing on St. Helena Island, Brickyard Landing on Lady’s Island and at Section 5 of the Spanish Moss Trail in Beaufort.
If you would like to volunteer to help at any local events, please RSVP to email@example.com so the organization may plan accordingly. Some events may be limited to the number of volunteers that can be accommodated.
Reef Build Events:
April 15 (Tuesday) 8:30a – 11:00a at Eddings Pt. Landing, St. Helena Island
April 26 (Saturday) 11:00a – 1:00p at Section 5 of the Spanish Moss Trail, Beaufort
April 26 (Saturday) 10:30a – 1:00p at Brickyard Landing, Lady’s Island
As always, participants must wear closed-toed shoes (no Crocs) and clothes you do not mind getting a little dirty. SCORE will provide the water, gloves, sunscreen and bug spray. Cups will be available for water but you’re encouraged to be eco-friendly and bring a refillable bottle.
If you love to volunteer and are looking for more opportunities, there are some daily opportunities to help around SCORE’s laboratory. Email at the above address with inquiries, and SCORE will be happy to coordinate days and times for you to assist.
