Pick some local sunshine at Merrick's U Pick Daffodil Farm

We’re starting to get an early taste of Spring in Beaufort, so we decided to celebrate by going to pick some local daffodils to adorn our kitchen table. Daffodils are one of the ways we celebrate spring’s arrival here in the Lowcountry, and their color helps to liven up any empty vase and puts smiles on the faces of many of us winter-weary Beaufortonians.

U Pick Daffodil is a family-owned and operated daffodil farm located off of 278 in Bluffton on Calhoun Plantation Road. After we exited the highway and pulled down the quaint dirt road; we started to get excited when we could see the bright yellow fields peeking through the trees. There are two parking areas, which will accommodate a decent amount of vehicles, and wide selection of buckets for picking are provided.Pick some local sunshine at Merrick's U Pick Daffodil Farm

After Cole tried out several different bucket colors and sizes, he took off down the middle path between the two large fields. The first half of the field had been picked over pretty well, but we had no problem finding multiple rows of gorgeous daffodils filling the back of the property with a sea of yellow. Cole was more interested in walking his bucket down the various rows of flowers, but I thoroughly enjoyed plucking the blooms and building my bouquet.

Not only do you get to go home with a handpicked bouquet, but the farm provided ample opportunities for some beautiful photos. The rows and rows of vibrant yellow blooms bring out the sunshine in any winter-hardened Beaufortonian. These fields would also provide the perfect backdrop for some Easter photos to send to the grandparents. Finally, there is a beautiful Spanish moss adorned tree in the back left corner. This tree, combined with the daffodils, provides the perfect backdrop for a beautiful spring family photo.

If planning a visit it’s best to text 843-368-1998 to make sure they still have blooms and are open.

To start, the farm is owned and operated by Chuck Merrick, a Bluffton local who was born and raised here on his family’s dairy farm. The daffodils are planted on the Dynamite Field. The field got this name because back when the field was originally cleared, the common practice was to use dynamite.

It has stayed true to its name because it truly is an explosion of color, so bright you can see it through the trees. Daffodils are perennials, but Chuck does plant some new bulbs each year.

The farm is open when flowers are available, weather permitting, but the owners recommend that you check their website, www.upickdaffodils.com, or call 843-368-1998, to make sure that there are still plenty of blooms to pick. Daffodils are only 25 cents a stem, and it is cash only.

Finally, I highly recommend sunscreen and closed-toed shoes. There is no shade on the fields, and there are several signs posted warning of ants, and we all know that they do bite.

The experience is well worth the drive to Bluffton, and we will definitely be back to replenish our vase as long as the fields are blooming.
