The Market Report: Habersham's First Friday rocks the block
By Gail Ankney | There was a flurry of activity in Beaufort’s Habersham Marketplace Friday evening with the First Friday Rock the Block Back to School Rally. People traveled from all over Beaufort and the Lowcountry to attend this fun-filled activity. The Marketplace hosted a school supply drive, food and vendor fair, entertainment, and their weekly farmers market with vendors selling homemade crafts, snacks and organic goods too. The Whale Branch HS Band expertly provided the crowd with some live music. The festivities attracted a decent gathering, despite the 90°+ heat. Yes, it was hot.
Habersham reminds one of a small town, just bustling with activity.
On the market side, the food vendors present were selling delicious items including nachos and cheese, various potato chips, draft beer, kettle corn, fresh eggs, cookies, tarts, mini cheesecakes, fresh bread and more.
Fresh produce available uncluded okra, bell peppers, eggplant, sweet potatoes, spinach, garlic, chives, radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, bull grapes and quite a bit more. End of summer markets mean a variety of goodies, and Habersham will have plenty to offer through the fall.
The craft vendors were there and you could choose from Phoenix trading cards, Children’s clothing, dig clothing, homemade soaps, local artistry and photography, candles, hair bows, head bands, flip flops, baskets, handmade jewelry, scarfs, and paper bag hats… a shoppers pleasure.
The author of Wrinkles in Paradise, Wanda Jane was also present to promote her collection of short stories which all have taken place right here in the Lowcountry. “This book is great for everyone, and those who are going through an illness, especially love these stories because they are all short and entertaining,” explains Jane.
The next Habersham Farmer’s Market is to take place on Friday, September 14th, so if you missed today’s festivities be sure not to make the same mistake next time.
The next First Friday event at Habersham Marketplace will be the Brews and Blues Fest, held on Oct 5th.
