Beaufort Twilight Run takes over Habersham
The annual Beaufort Twilight Run was held in a sea of humanity on Saturday at Habersham Marketplace with a day full of events from races to live music, lots of food and celebrating being fit and having fun in a beautiful place like Beaufort.
The Marketplace was decked out with local signs and fanfare, covered with booths, and criss-crossed by volunteers; and of course runners all showing excitement for the races. Over 1,000 runners participated in the day’s events including hundreds of kids and also members of the Zap Fitness-Reebok professional running team who joined some top local runners to lead the races.
Over 200 volunteers helped to organize the event, setting up the scene and other various details including parking, booth tending, and welcoming people to the event. There were booths from many different local organizations promoting various aspects of healthy living ranging from good eats to some of our local organizations.
The smell of fresh cooked food filled the air and there were many other sweets and treats from vendors as well as the Marketplace’s fabulous restaurants. Runners and onlookers could enjoy a “cold one”, or munch on fresh produce provided at the finish line. The local restaurants that make their home in Habersham, Berto’s Tex-Mex and Maggie’s Pub & Eatery, also opened their doors ready to take on the hungry runners as soon as they took their final steps across the finish line.
Especially enjoyable was the kids fun run, which as an onlooker did appear to be tons of fun. Organized by age groups, the children ran, galloped, skipped, and walked alongside their friends and family with big smiles and winning attitudes. The adults had their share of fun too with their choice of races: a 5K Run & Fun Walk, or the more challenging 8K and 10 mile runs.
Several course records were set on Saturday with Olympic Marathon runner Pardon Ndhlovu setting a new 10 mile course record of 50:43 and new records were set by the 13.1 Challenge winners – Male: Seth Tucker 1:13:31 and Female: Joy Miller 1:18:17
