As parents who have survived the pandemic with small children here in the Lowcountry, we have questioned wether or not our kids should receive the vaccine and most importantly…is it safe?

With the numbers climbing daily here in Beaufort County and spinning out of control all over the country, widespread vaccination for COVID-19 is a critical tool to best protect everyone from COVID-19 and COVID-19 related complications.

The COVID-19 vaccine is the most effective way of protecting your children and others in our Beaufort, SC community from Covid-19.

While early in the pandemic, some believed that children were not susceptible to COVID-19, that has been proven false. Children can get sick from the virus and certainly play a role in the spreading it. Getting everyone ages 5 years and older vaccinated can help the entire family, including siblings who are not eligible for vaccination and family members who may be at risk of getting very sick if they are infected.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) states that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is approved for those 5 and older. Moderna and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccines are approved for 18 and up.

Beaufort Memorial Hospital recommends that adolescents age 12-15 years receive the same two-dose regimen currently being administered to those who are ages 16 and older. Children 5-11 years old receive a two-dose regimen that is 1/3 of what is given to adults and adolescents. The two doses in this series are also given 3 weeks/21 days apart.

Schools and the COVID-19 vaccine…

About half of parents of school-age children say their child’s school provided information about how to get their child vaccinated for COVID-19, and more than four in ten say their child’s school encouraged parents to get their children vaccinated. Parents who say their school has encouraged them to get their children vaccinated are more likely to say their child has indeed gotten vaccinated. In fact, parents of 5-11 year-olds whose school encouraged vaccination are four times as likely as those whose school did not encourage vaccination to say their younger child has already gotten the COVID-19 vaccine (28% vs. 7%).
