With word that parts of the beach, park and lighthouse set to open on Memorial Day weekend Friends of Hunting Island State Park has put out a call for volunteers to assist in a few areas before the park reopens.

In a press release issued early this week, FOHI asks for volunteers to help get Hunting Island State Park ready to reopen. Work begins on Monday, May 22, at 9 AM. It continues through Wednesday, and possibly Thursday, depending on how many people help.

Volunteers are needed to help paint the lighthouse fence, assist in assembling new picnic tables, and provide help in clearing some of the trails of debris that remains. Friends of Hunting Island has purchased 100 gallons of paint for the fence, and all the boards went up in March allowing the treated wood to season for a few months before paint goes on.

Those that want to assist may go to the park the morning of Monday May 22nd and will be let in without fee, and those that help will be among the first to see our beloved park and beach before it reopens later in the week.

This article will be updated if additional information becomes available, or if the park’s needs change.
